Alumni Association

Mansfield University's 2008-2009 Alumni Board of DirectorsThe Alumni Association is led by a volunteer board of 18 members representing a wide range of class years, geographical locations and varied interests.

The primary responsibility of the board is to advise Mansfield University on programs which serve alumni and ways that alumni can serve Mansfield.

All persons who have graduated from Mansfield University or its predecessor institutions and have a demonstrated interest in the university and alumni programs are eligible for consideration of serving on the Board of Directors.  To view the 2009-2010 Alumni Board of Directors roster, please click here.

Our Origin

The charter of the Alumni Association can be traced back to 1871 when Mansfield graduates formed the organization for the purpose of "encouraging and fostering the spirit of friendship among graduates."

Student Alumni Ambassador Danelle Miller and Arnie Parker '40 look at a Carontawan during Alumni Weekend 2008As the organization has evolved over time, so has its purpose.  While continuing to build on the core values and traditions of the past, the current focus of the alumni association is to communicate, involve, and motivate alumni to keep their connection with Mansfield University and fellow alumni alive and well.

Educated, committed, and caring alumni provide the core leadership needed to face the challenges of today and the needs of the future.

Mansfield University alumni constitute perhaps the greatest single resource on which the university can depend. They offer the richest potential as resources for advice, advocacy, student recruitment and financial support.

Mansfield University graduates become members of the MU Alumni Association, a free, non-dues paying organization, upon commencement.

Celebrating Alumni

2008 Society of Honors recipientsThe Alumni Association celebrates alumni in a number of ways.  It sponsors and assists with many campus events and activities, including Homecoming and Alumni Weekend, as well as off-campus and regional events.  A highlight of Alumni Weekend is a celebration for the 50th anniversary class.  It has become a tradition for the class to acknowledge their gratitude to the university by presenting a gift.  In recent years, class gifts have included custom-designed china which incorporates architectural details of North Hall, a post clock centrally located in the student mall, as well as endowed scholarship funds that will continue to increase in value and benefit deserving students for years to come.

Each year, outstanding alumni achievements are recognized through the Society of Honors program.

  • The "Outstanding Young Alumni Award" is given for outstanding professional performance and achievements to alumni who have graduated in the last 20 years.
  • The "Distinguished Educator Award" recognizes outstanding service and dedication to education.
  • The "Elsie Burke Service Award" honors alumni who have demonstrated outstanding loyalty and service to Mansfield Univerisity.
  • The "Alumni Citation Award" acknowledges exceptional contributions to society through professional, civic, and philanthropic work.

These distinguished young men and women promote the interests and goals of the University from a student's perspective, and develop an understanding of the role of alumni in the life of the university.

They serve as official greeters for many University events and become involved with programs that affect the entire University community, including faculty, staff, the student body, the alumni constituency and even local community members.  To learn more about the Student Alumni Ambassadors, click here.
