John V. Elmore ’78

John V. ElmoreThe Alumni Citation Award, established in 1969, recognizes contributions to society through professional, civic and philanthropic work. After graduating from Mansfield with a B.A. degree in Criminal Justice Administration, John Elmore became a New York State Trooper. He earned his Juris doctorate in 1984 from the Syracuse University College of Law. Stints as an assistant district attorney in Manhattan and New York Assistant Attorney General followed before he established his own law practice with offices in Buffalo and Niagara Falls, NY.

The author of Fighting For Your Life; An African- American Criminal Justice Survival Guide, Elmore has been interviewed about legal and social issues on several national radio shows. He has given lectures and speeches at universities, colleges and civic events across the country.

A life member of the NAACP, Elmore is a past recipient of that organization’s Medgar Evers Civil Rights Award, the Minority Bar Association Community Service Award and the Erie County (NY) Criminal Justice Award. In recognition of his long service as a coach, sponsor and mentor to several youth organizations in western New York, he has received the Good Neighbor Award from Parents Magazine, Ebony Magazine’s Fantastic Father Award and was named 1994 Citizen of the Year by The Buffalo News.

Elmore and his wife Redalhia reside in Williamsville, NY. He is the father of four children: Kristen, Justin, Sonya and Twila.
