The Distinguished Educator Award recognizes outstanding service and dedication to education. After graduating from Mansfield in 1971 with a B.S. in education, John earned his master’s in education from Elmira College in 1975 and spent 15 years as a high school biology teacher and head track and field coach.
In 1986 John received his principal’s certificate from Western Maryland College and is completing his 13th year as the assistant principal of Hempfield High School in Landisville, PA. His responsibilities include new teacher induction coordinator, mentor trainer and Act 48 Professional Development Committee member.
He is also the safe schools coordinator and is the author of the district’s safe schools program which resulted in elementary, middle and high school building emergency plans for staff, principals and district office personnel. John wrote the secondary alternative school program for secondary school students at risk, developed and implemented the secondary peer mediation program, and initiated an elementary peer mediation pilot program.
He has published numerous articles and has presented comprehensive safe schools workshops, continuing education courses, and has presented for three consecutive years at the PA Association of Secondary School Principals and Assistant Principals conferences. In 2000 he was selected as the Pennsylvania Assistant Principal of the Year by the PA Association of Secondary School Principals.
John resides in Lititz, PA, with his wife Bonnie and is the father of three children and two stepchildren.
