The Distinguished Educator Award, established in 1986, recognizes outstanding service and dedication to education. After earning a B.S. in Elementary Education from Mansfield in 1968, McCalips accepted a teaching position in the State College Area School District where he has taught for the past 35 years.
In 1971 he earned his Master’s in Elementary Education at Penn State. Throughout his career McCalips has taught fifth and sixth grade at Boalsburg and Panorama Valley Elementary Schools. He served as intramural building coordinator and coached a variety of sports for 25 years. McCalip now serves on the State College Area District’s Reporting System Committee, an innovative grade reporting system that has improved the way student progress is reported to parents.
Throughout his career he has been an active member of several educational organizations including the State College Area Education Association, the Pennsylvania Education Association and the National Education Association. McCalips and his wife Kathleen are the parents of two daughters. The McCalips reside in Boalsburg, PA, where he has served as United Way district coordinator, Centre County Democratic chairman, Harris Township Supervisor and on the Centre Region Council of Governments.
In 1988, McCalips was appointed to the Mansfield University Council of Trustees. He served that body for nine years, two as Council Chair.
