The Elsie Burke Service Award recognizes outstanding service to Mansfield University. After graduating from Mansfield in 1966 with a B.S. in home economics, Anne began her career by teaching first grade in the Northern York County School District in Pennsylvania.
In 1975 she earned her master’s in education from Shippensburg University. Anne has worked with student teachers from many local colleges and was awarded the school district’s “Teaching Excellence Award” for the 1986-87 school year. She has also been honored with Gift of Time Award, Outstanding Teacher Nominee from Shippensburg University, Pioneering Partners-GTE Project Award and was featured in the PSEA educational campaign on “Classroom Close-ups.”
Anne’s love for and dedication to Mansfield have never diminished. When asked to serve on the Alumni Board, she gladly accepted and served as 2nd vice president, 1st vice president, and president. She chaired the Society of Honors and was on the Alumni Weekend, Homecoming, Pennsylvania Council of Alumni Associations, and North Hall Open House Committees from 1992-1998.
Anne and her husband Jay, a 1966 graduate of Mansfield, have two children, Nathan, a successful business owner in Harrisburg and Jennifer, a 1994 graduate of Mansfield and a first grade teacher in the same building as Anne. Anne and Jay are expecting their first grandchild in July.
