The Elsie Burke Service Award, established in 1983, recognizes outstanding loyalty and service to Mansfield University. After graduating from Mansfield in 1956 with a B.S. in education, Terry taught for seven years in Pennsylvania and Virginia. He earned a Master’s in Education from Shippensburg in 1963, an M.A. from American University in 1967 and a Ph.D. from American in 1972, both in international relations.
After graduating from American, Terry took a faculty position at York College, where he continues today as a professor of international relations. He teaches classes in Latin American history, government and politics, pre-Columbian civilizations and international relations. His extensive travels have taken him to all 50 states, Central and South America, and many European countries.
In 1983 he was recognized with the York College Faculty Alumni Award. Mansfield University honored Terry with the Distinguished Educator Award in 1997 for his outstanding service and dedication to education. Terry says that he loves teaching and his “love of learning started with Mansfield.” He has given back to his alma mater by serving two terms on the Alumni Board, including a term as vice-president. Terry is also a familiar figure at games and concerts on campus and across the Commonwealth.
He resides in Dillsburg and has two daughters and three grandchildren.
