The Elsie Burke Service Award, established in 1983, recognizes outstanding loyalty and service to Mansfield University. After earning a B.S. in secondary education from Mansfield in 1957, Bob Killgore accepted a position in the Northern Potter School District in Ulysses, PA. He continued his teaching career, which focused on American History and World Cultures, in the Allentown School District from 1958 until his retirement in 1993.
Killgore earned his M.S. in Education from Temple University, and acquired additional graduate credits at Lehigh University and Wilkes College. He was the recipient of various awards, including the Cooperating Teacher Award from Kutztown University, the Service Key Award from the Phi Delta Kappa International Fraternity, and in 1992 and 1994, he was included in Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers. He continues to teach history courses for The Institute for Learning in Retirement at Cedar Crest College and acts as a tour guide and interpreter for the Lehigh County Historical Society.
Killgore’s “love for learning and teaching began at Mansfield and that love continues to the present day.” Killgore served on the Alumni Association Board of Directors from 1997-2003, and was president from 2000-2001. He has represented Mansfield at presidential inaugurations at both Moravian and Muhlenberg Colleges and has participated in the “Welcome to Mansfield” card-writing campaign for prospective freshmen.
He and his wife, Betty Jean (Rex) ’54, reside in Allentown. They have one son and a granddaughter who will enter Mansfield University in the fall of 2004. Killgore’s mother and grandmother were also graduates of Mansfield.
