Community Service Opportunities

Listed below is a register of available projects and community agencies that can be of use for your club or organization to get involved in the community. Also, there will be a table with hours that are reported to keep a tally of hours worked.

Purpose: Christian Retreat Center

Description: Traveling to and from facility is required. General maintenance including grounds keeping, cleaning, window washing, housekeeping, etc. Hours will be considered with director or assistant.

Purpose: Community Health Service

Description:

  1. Community Multiphase Blood Analysis - Clinics will be offered during September throughout the county. Volunteers are needed for registration.
  2. Flu vaccine clinics need volunteers for registration during October and November.
  3. Other clinics we might have.

Purpose: To render services to SSMH and its patients through ways approved or proposed by the administration of the hospital.

Description: We organize many activities, including The Candlelight Dinner Dora in November, The Strawberry Short Cake Booth in June, a Fashion Show in the Spring, and a Bread Pudding booth in December. If you can stuff an envelope or hull a strawberry or bake a bread pudding to help us other ways - we need you! You will make good friends, have fun and support your local hospital at the same time.

Purpose:To provide many volunteer services at SSMH.

Description: Volunteers staff our Information Desks, the Out Patient Registration Area, the OR Control Desk, and the ER room. They deliver flowers and mail to patients, transport patients to the radiology area, and assist with many tasks that help the staff provide the care needed by your family and friends each day. You will become part of the SSMH family, by helping patients and staff while supporting your hospital.

Purpose: Nursing Home

Description:

Activities in which volunteers will be working directly with residents.

  1. Assist with daily scheduling activities: coffee break, exercise class, bingo, current events, rhythm band, etc.
  2. Transport residents to and from scheduled activities.
  3. Transport residents to and from social activities within community.
  4. Conduct craft classes with residents.
  5. Conduct game nights, evening programs.
  6. "Adopt a Resident" program (1-1 visits).
  7. Show movies and / or slide shows.
  8. Conduct discussion groups.
  9. Pass and read mail to residents.
  10. Assist residents with writing letters to families and friends.
  11. Hold game session (checkers, card games).
  12. Conduct spiritual activities, church, bible study.
  13. Assist with wheelchair square dancing and outdoor games.
  14. Nail manicures.
  15. Take residents for a walk outdoors.
  16. Transporting therapy residents to therapy and back to rooms in a wheelchair.

Activities in which volunteers will be working indirectly with residents.

  1. Pen Pals
  2. Helping to decorate facility.
  3. Passing ice water.
  4. Making beds
  5. Answering phones 4-8 evenings.
  6. Folding clothes in laundry.

Activities with no resident involvement.

  1. Provide holiday and seasonal decorations for residents doors and throughout facility.
  2. Make lab robes, bibs, catheter covers, and wheelchair accessory bags.
  3. Help with addressing and mailing bulk mail.
  4. Print monthly calendar and birthday posters for lobby.
  5. Typing, filing, stuffing envelopes, etc.
  6. Assist with fundraising events.

Special Activities

  1. Provide music during lunch and supper hour.
  2. Provide evening entertainment such as music, singing, slide shows, etc

Purpose: To provide vocational / employment for all people who face barriers to competitive employment

Description:

  1. Separate toys, ware, glass, clothing.
  2. Supply product for production.
  3. Clean, if and when necessary.
  4. Display merchandise in correct manner.
  5. Help customers.
  6. Price and ticket all products.
  7. Degree to which respect and confidence of co-workers is established.
