The prospect of going abroad for an extended time may make you, your family, or your friends anxious about your life outside the United States.
Mansfield University monitors very carefully the security situation in the many cities around the world where Mansfield students study, and in particular in Volgograd, Russia, where our largest exchange program is based. The American Embassy in Moscow provides an information and support network for all American citizens on an extended stay in Russia. We register all participants in the Volgograd program with the U. S. Department of State, and we receive all updates from the American Embassy about the security situation in Russia. A Mansfield faculty member accompanies students for the Volgograd semester and is in regular communication with officials in Volgograd and Mansfield.
The staff at the International Student Exchange Program offices in Washington also takes security very seriously and keeps in touch constantly with all ISEP coordinators everywhere.
It may be helpful for you and your family to compare the risks of studying abroad with the routine but less-noticed risks of visiting large cities across the United States, with participating in athletic programs, with doing internships in urban areas, with driving on slippery roads, and with the countless other risks American college students face on a daily basis.
