Student Conferences

STUDENT CONFERENCES

  • Student Leadership Development Institution (Blair County Convention Center, Altoona, PA)

2-day leadership development conference held annually designed to offer students personal and professional leadership skills.  In addition to workshops, sessions, and panel discussions, guest speakers present keynote addresses at luncheons and banquets.  A Leadership Roundtable Discussion is open to students who serve as officers of campus organizations.  Networking with students from schools across the state as well as the Administrators and Faculty is encouraged.

 

  • Annual Conference of the PA Black Conference on Higher Education

Professional conference for professionals and students.  The conference focuses on the status of students of color in higher education institutions in Pennsylvania.  The global initiative sponsored by the conference include and annual contribution to the Zebilla Technical Secondary School in the northern part of Ghana.  Two short-term international visits have been organized through the organization led by Ms. Annie Cooper and Dr. George Agbango.  The first trip in 2001 was in collaboration with the Global Awareness International Society included (9) students from various Pennsylvania schools. The most recent trip in 2005 focused on “Comparative Education”  and the group included two students sponsored by Millersville University.

 

  • Intercultural Relations Conference (March)

A two-day mini conference opened to the public and students from other schools.  Presenters are primarily Mansfield University Faculty and Staff.   A performance or guest presenter is featured at a Friday evening banquet and/or a Saturday luncheon.

MULTICULTURAL PROGRAMS

  • Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration:

Hispanic culture is celebrated by Poster and Bulletin board displays on the 3rd floor of Alumni Hall.  Artifacts and crafts from different Latin American countries are showcased in the Martin Luther King Jr. Center. Speakers are invited to bring awareness of Hispanic Heritage and Latin Culture.  Panel discussions are also held with student representatives focusing on the university experience and current Latino issues.

 

  • Annual Multicultural Enrichment Weekend (Fall Break)

3-days/2-nights in a selected urban area within 8 hours driving time. An itinerary which everyone must follow includes a guided tour of the city, visits to museums, aquariums, or other places of interest.  The Mansfield International Students Organization (MISO) sponsors this event and select sites in the spring to be visited in the Fall.  Registration fee includes: accommodations (up to four persons per room), (2) group dinners, city tour, and visit to museums or other activity decided by group vote.  Evenings are free.

 

  • KWANZAA Celebration (last day of fall classes)

Students are chosen to perform the Nguzo Saba (Seven Principles) of Kwanzaa.  Sponsored by the Black Students Union.

 

 

  • International Students Forums and Panel Discussions

International Students are asked to participate on a panel to discuss some selected issues.  This is an interactive forum that engages audience participation, questions, and comments.

 

 

  • Martin Luther King, Jr. Noon Hour Program  (January 15)

Planned and coordinated by Dr. Jannis Floyd and Ms. Annie Cooper.  A topic is chosen and members of the campus are invited to speak.  The program also features music, poetry, and reflection.

  • Annual International Festival (April)

A Saturday evening event sponsored by the Mansfield International Students Organization (MISO), featuring a smorgasbord of international cuisine, traditional fashion show, and entertainment.  Open to the public.

 

 

  • Multicultural Students Recognition Program (last day of classes)

An awards banquet for ALANA students sponsored by the Black Students Union.
