Six years ago I approached my husband, Jerry, with a request. I asked him if he could and would support my dream of returning to graduate school for a new degree. I had finished my master’s degree in Elementary Education shortly after we were married and at the time I proclaimed, "I’ll never step foot in a classroom as a student again." In some ways I kept that promise. This time, I explained, I wanted to earn an online master’s degree in School Libraries and Information Technology from Mansfield University and the best part about it was that I could do it all from my own computer; no classrooms, no traveling and no nights away from the family.

This past June when I closed down my classroom, I experienced all of the normal emotions. The room felt empty without my twenty-four students, and although I was looking forward to the summer break, I knew I would miss my students and the wonderful times we had shared throughout the year. I feel this same way at the end of every school year, but this year it was different. I would not be coming back to Derry Township as a fourth grade teacher in the fall. The Mansfield University Master of Education Program in School Library and Information Technology (SL& IT) opened many doors of possibilities for me. Two aspects of the program struck me when I began taking classes in Fall Semester 2006. It is a rigorous program, and it is very practical. It was the intensity of the program and the dedication of the faculty which prepared me well for what I was later to encounter while working on my doctorate and taking on various leadership roles. The practicality of the program is particularly attractive because when one is working in such depth on assignments, it is easier to value the work when you know you will be able to put it into practice in a school setting.

After graduating from Mansfield’s SL&IT’s program in 2005, my goal was to make the switch from 9th-grade English teacher and 8th-grade history teacher to school library media specialist at Mount Carmel Area Junior-Senior High School. That goal was realized much sooner than I anticipated when the SLMS made a surprise decision to retire early after the 2005-06 school year.
